Pico, the start-up that is owned by TikTok’s parent, ByteDance, has released details of its new headset, the Pico 4. The unit is smaller and lighter than the Pico3 but has dual 2160 x 2160 LCD displays (72Hz/90Hz powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor with 8GB of memory. The headset has pancake optics to reduce bulk and is said to have a 105° field of view. The IPD adjustment is motorised and the headset features ‘inside-out’ tracking. There are four external cameras and an RGB 16megapixel RGB camera.
There are two storage levels of 128GB (€429) and 256GB (€499). The battery life is said to be three hours and it is built into the headstrap so the weight rises from 295gms without the strap to 586gms with.
The Pico 4 will launch in Japan, Korea, and 13 European countries on October 18th. It is expected to launch a later version with gaze cameras that will be known as the Pro or Enterprise model, depending on the market.

The Information pointed out that it had been reported that Pico wanted to sell a million headsets in 2021, but only sold just over half that number.
What We Think
This headset looks like a pretty competent hardware design on the face of it. It will be interesting to see how it performs compared to the Meta Quest 2, at which it is clearly aimed. (BR)
