Taiwanese sources say that Epistar, the LED maker, is developing new direct backlight systems using small LEDs to help to counter the progress of OLED TV smartphones. The use of larger numbers of smaller LEDs should improve contrast to compete with the quality of OLEDs. The development is being done with Chinese and Taiwanese LCD panel makers.
Analyst Comment
There were broadcast monitors at IBC that used more than 2000 LEDs to give very good black levels at IBC. It would be a surprise if this technology was not being investigated for higher volume applications. (BR)
