Optoma UHD Projectors are Aggressively Priced

Optoma has released new UltraHD and HDR DLP projectors, the UHD60 and UHD65 at very competitive prices for that resolution. The prices are £2,499 ($2,700 + tax) and £2,999 ($3,250 + tax), respectively, and they use a TI chip with XPR technology. The projectors have HDCP 2.2 for content projection and the UHD65 also features PureMotion frame interpolation. The UHD 60 has 3.000 Ansi lumens while the UHD65 uses an RGBRGB colour wheel which reduces the peak brightness to 2,200 ANSI lumens, but should give better colour performance, although both units are claimed to support sRGB. HDR support means support for HDR10.

Common features include 2 x 4W audio, dual HDMI (2.0 and 1.4/MHL) and VGA. There is vertical lens shift (±15%) and a 1.6:1 zoom ratio with a 1.39 – 2.22:1 throw ratio. ‘Smart’ operation is via optional USB dongles. System noise is 25 dB. Lamp life is quoted at 15,000 hours (there are 10,000 and 4,000 hour modes, as well) and the lamp is rated at 240W.

Analyst Comment

It’s unusual to see the dimmer version of a projector having a higher price, but in this case, it looks as though the brighter unit is more aimed at commercial applications, while the UHD65 should have better colour volume. We are assuming that the UHD60 has an RGBW colour wheel. (BR)
