Onix Plans High Res, HFR Curved OLED VR

Our friends at Jon Peddie’s Techwatch flagged up to us a new start up company in the PC-based headset market, that will have an UltraHD curved OLED display with 120Hz refresh and 10 bit colour depth, while also supporting 99% of AdobRGB. The design is a tethered type, but uses a single Type-C USB connector with a Thunderbolt alt mode. As well as the high res display, the company is looking at using SMI’s gaze tracking for foveated rendering. The plan is to offer a final headset (which has still to be finalised) at around $1,200, so it will be for high end users only. However, the company plans a simpler version first.

The company is in the early stages and is still raising money and with a planned launch date of ‘late’ 2017. The image is of the company’s first prototype. Techwatch reports that there will be a secondary USB 3.0 connector on the front of the headset to allow the addition of a camera to support AR applications. (BR)
