ODG Announces Hazardous Location Certified Smartglasses

The Osterhout Design Group announced a new augmented reality headset that allows the user to work in ‘extreme environments’. You can think of it as a ruggedized version of the well known R7 headset. The new version is called R-7HL and complies with Military Standard 810G certification for drop, shock, vibration, low pressure and temperature extremes; and the ANSI Z87.1 dustproof and splash proof certification. This allows the headset to be used in industrial environments that typically require some protective eyewear such as oil exploration and production, utilities, chemical production, airport refueling, and pharmaceuticals for example.

The new model will be available through certified retailers in the middle of 2017 for $3,500.

Analyst Comment

While it makes sense that some of the industrial customers of ODG are looking for a more rugged headset, the interesting part is that it is based on the R7 model and not the upcoming R8 model. Maybe there will be some delays before we will see the R8 actually entering the market. (NH)
