Apple Orders 70 million OLED Panels from Samsung Display

Apple

Apple has ordered 70 million small-size curved OLED displays from Samsung Display for use in the new iPhone 8, according to Korea-based, Chosun Biz and ET News. The contract is believed to be a two-year deal and worth $9 billion.

Around 200 million iPhones are sold each year and approximately 30% are expected to have flexible screens. Thus far, Apple has only used LCD panels in iPhones.

Nikkei quoted a tech analyst as saying, “Apple has ordered 70 million units of OLED panels from Samsung this year, while Samsung is preparing to churn out as many as 95 million for Apple in 2017, in case demand exceeds expectations.”

To meet the demand, Samsung has shut down one LCD production line in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, and replaced it with an OLED production line.
