NHK Bonds Channels to Put Super Hi-Vision over Cable

At the Ceatec show, Japanese broadcaster, NHK, said that has developed a set top box (STB) that allows the display of UltraHD or 8K signals by exploiting and bonding multiple cable channels to give enough bandwidth. Up to now, delivery of Super Hi-Vision 8K content has been delivered by satellite. A key development was the creation of a demodulation chip by Socionext Inc. that can combine the images from the channels, supporting ITU standards, and makes the STB relatively compact. KDDI, Jupiter Telecommunications and Japan Digital Serve Corp also helped develop the box. J:Com has been trialling 4K services since Jun 2014, and a 4K VoD service since May 2015.
