New York Startup is Creating AR Menus for Restaurants

Burger chain, Bareburger, is in the process of introducing an AR menu created by New York-based start-up Kabaq. Using custom Snapchat World Lenses, visitors to the restaurant can scan a Snapcode which will unlock the menu on their device. Then, they can select a dish and take a closer look at a virtual version of it through their smartphone screen, allowing them to resize it, take a picture and above all, gauge how appetising it looks before they order.

3D images of dishes are created using photogrammetry—i.e. taking a picture of an object from different angles and creating a model from the data.

Restaurants in the US and Dubai are handing out trial Snapcodes with takeaway orders ahead of the menu’s official rollout. The company says the tech can be integrated with other apps like Facebook Camera, while restaurants also have the option of incorporating it into their own apps.
