When selecting an adhesive for electronic device assembly, reworkability, instant green strength, excellent reliability, and a long open time and pot life are attractive attributes. New Dow Corning® EA-4600 HM RTV Black UV silicone hot-melt adhesive can provide all of these features, which can improve processing efficiency, quality and total cost of ownership for consumer electronics device manufacturers.
This in-demand technology will be featured at the Society for Information Display’s SID Display Week 2015 International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition, scheduled for May 31 through June 5 at the San Jose (California) Convention Center.
Dow Corning Application Engineering and Technical Service Specialist Ryan Schneider will present a technical poster titled “Silicone Hot-Melt Adhesive Providing Protection, Waterproofing and Reworkability for Precision Assembly of Electronic Devices” (Poster No. 62) during a poster session from 5 to 8 p.m. June 4 in Ballroom 220A. The poster is part of the session’s “Display Manufacturing” category.
Schneider’s poster outlines the benefits of Dow Corning EA-4600 HM RTV Black UV for both the processor and the end user. Graphs detailing cost of ownership (versus double-sided tape), reworkability, open time, push-out adhesion strength and lap shear adhesion strength are all included, as are details regarding precision narrow beading and a brief guide to product application.
“As demand for next-generation smart devices continues to accelerate and design trends increasingly favor narrow bezels and other innovative designs, electronics leaders are seeking adhesives that can help them meet their design and manufacturing goals,” Schneider said. “Dow Corning EA-4600 HM RTV Black UV hot-melt adhesive is easily dispensed and able to deliver instant green strength upon dispensing, which can help speed assembly operations. The strong bonds it forms after full cure also support the cost-effective, water-resistant narrow bezels that many designers are incorporating into their next-generation concepts for smartphones, tablets and wearable technologies.”
Dow Corning EA-4600 HM RTV Black UV is a reactive material that can be applied neatly as a liquid melt in very thin (less than 0.5 mm wide) bond lines. It cools quickly and cures at room temperature to become a viscoelastic polymer that provides strong, flexible, primerless adhesion to common plastic and metal substrates.
The material offers extended service temperatures from -40°C to 150°C. It will soften when exposed to high temperatures but will revert to its typical properties after cooling. Unlike most conventional polyurethane-based hot-melt solutions, Dow Corning EA-4600 HM RTV Black UV incorporates ultraviolet (UV) markers to support automated UV inspection of finished parts. It also can be easily reworked within 24 hours of application. Once fully cured, Dow Corning EA-4600 HM RTV Black UV delivers outstanding durable protection against chemicals, water and dust to enhance the reliability and performance of high-value electronics assemblies.
In addition to the poster session, Display Week attendees can learn more about this new adhesive at the exhibition booths of two Dow Corning distributors: Ellsworth Adhesives (Booth 1245) and Krayden (Booth 1519).
