What They Say
Yesterday we reported on the leak about a new HTC headset (New HTC Headset Leaked?). After the video that we reported went online, the creator was contacted with more information. The extra information:
- The headset will use a Qualcomm XR2 Gen 1 chip
- There will be a depth sensor with the RGB camera
- Pricing will be $1,000+
- There will be an optional face and eye tracking module.
What We Think
The news, especially of the pricing, disappointed some VR fans who had hoped that the headset might compete with Meta’s Quest. However, that’s unrealistic given the pricing of the Meta product. Up to now Meta has been prepared to fund very low pricing to seed the market, but if you don’t have that firm’s level of other income and have to make a living off the hardware alone, there is no way to compete.
