What They Say
Mojo Vision said that its AR contact lens should be available as a prototype later this year. (Mojo Vision Details Low-Power Chips for Augmented Reality Contact Lenses). The display is hexagonal and is less than hal a millimetre wide. The lens is surrounded by electronics including a camera and a motion tracker to sense the movement of the eye.
Battery life remains a challenge and the device still operates for less than an hour and needs to be charged overnight. The display, which has 14Kppi projects light directly into the eye and is invisible, with “no impact on your vision of the real world”. However, you can “read a book or watch a movie with your eyes closed.”
What We Think
I have been sceptical about this kind of technology, but I’m coming around to the idea that it could be a big business in the longer term. A bit like professional users of AR/VR I can imagine users that are prepared to put up with the practical downsides of this kind of device, but it may be a long time before they gain mass acceptance.
