In an interview with the BBC, Microsoft CEO Sataya Nadella, of course, praised the recent release of WIndows 10 as the begin of a journey into a new era. While this may be true for Microsoft from an OS perspective, we should not forget that Microsoft is actually charging nothing for upgrading its OS, hoping that this approach does actually help Microsoft to move closer to Apple which has a higher percentage of its users actually using the latest OS.
One of the features of Microsoft 10 that shows the willingness of Microsoft to be an exciting technology leader again, is the incorporation of the Microsoft HoloLens device into the discussion. At the end of the interview, Nadella said that the HoloLens is meant to attract the interest of people in a way Microsoft has not for a while.
He continued by saying that the HoloLens will be released via a developer version first, followed by an enterprise version and finally a consumer version. This also shows that the first use case for HoloLens is the enterprise market, very similar to the recent statements and rumors for Google Glass. He also mentioned a general timetable for the HoloLens introduction. The first version will be available in a year and the final consumer version within a five year time frame. All that will fall within the expected life cycle of Windows 10 of course. – NH
