Microdisplays industry: an explosive ecosystem mixing technical innovations, strategy games and attractive applications

What They Say

Yole Développement has forecast high growth for microdisplay modules to be used in AR headsets and HUDs, with more than 100% CAGR until 2025 from $1.9 billion this year to $4.2 billion.

AR headset displays are expected to grow at 110% CAGR to $1.8 billion in 2025 from $45 million this year (estimated).

Competing technologies all have pros and cons, but OLED-on-Si and microLEDs will become game changers, the firm said.

New projection technologies are required for automotive HUDs, alongside innovative optical components, to be able to provide useful, convenient, and safe heads-up displays while occupying as little volume as possible in the car. The first of these modules has just been released in the newest Mercedes S-Class.

“As we are seeing the first models using a projection microdisplay, we expect the microdisplay module market for automotive HUDs to grow at a 107% CAGR until 2025, to reach US$285 million”.

What We Think

This one slipped by us when it was released a couple of weeks ago, but it has useful numbers, so we thought it worth reporting, still. (BR)
