What They Say
Protocol Entertainment’s Janko Roettgers got a chance to try a pre-release version of the Meta Cambria headset, which is intended as a higher specified headset after the Quest 2. He said that it was just one demo, but showed the mixed reality feature which he describes as ‘a kind of secret superpower’. The headset includes colour image sensors – not photorealistic but ‘more decent-quality home video, less “Blair Witch Project”‘. The sensors are said to be three times the resolution of the Quest 2. The colour support also allows better object detection. The headset has a dedicated infrared projector-based depth sensor.
Roettgers said that hand-tracking on Quest outperformed the company’s expectations, and that Meta is doubling down on this input method for future headsets.
What We Think
Mixed reality with passthrough video has a lot of advantages over AR, but there are real challenges in minimising video latency and processing time to keep things feeling ‘live’.
Separately, Reuters reported that Meta is preparing cutbacks in its Reality Labs division. (BR)
