Merck has previewed what it will be talking about at SID. The company said that it will show its ultra-brightness fringe field switching (UB-FFS) technology which it says is growing in share in its mobile market, but is being extended for larger displays including TV panels.
The company also said that its new self-aligned vertical alignment (SA-VA) liquid crystal technology is expected to get into commercial products this year and is a development of its PS-VA (polymer-stabilised VA) LCD materials. The SA-VA technology uses less energy, uses less solvent and has fewer process steps in display production. There is no need for a polyimide layer. Because the SA-VA technology can be used at lower temperatures, it is suitable for sensitive materials, for example in premium products or future applications such as flexible displays.
Merck will also show what it is doing on flexible displays with the UK’s Flexenable. It will also talk about its work to develop printable OLED materials.
