Logitech has announced that its Harmony Link device, designed to turn a smartphone or tablet into a universal remote for home appliances such as TVs, will be deactivated from March 16th 2018.
All of the Harmony Link’s functions are supported by a cloud-based network, which will be switched off, rendering the device useless.
Logitech is doing away with Harmony Link in favour of its younger sibling, the Harmony Hub. Current owners of the Harmony Link affected by the shutdown have been offered 35% off the purchase price of the Harmony Hub by way of compensation.
Analyst Comment
This is not the first time that we have reported on products becoming unusable because of the end of cloud services. It’s usually because a company fails, but that’s not the case here. I’m a happy Logitech Harmony remote user, but this move would make me think twice about upgrading.
