LG Electronics Moves OLEDs into Monitors

What They Say

LG Electronics announced a new 31.5″ UltraHD OLED Pro Ultrafine monitor with 99% of DCI-P3 and 99% of AdobeRGB coverage. The monitor has a USB-C port (with 90W of PD), two DisplayPorts and HDMI as well as 3 Type A USB connections.

What We Think

We misheard this as an 8K monitor initially, which was a real surprise, but it is just UltraHD, although that still means quite a complex and tricky backplane. No details of price, availability or brightness were available when we reported this, but when we get more, we’ll report it. The logic of the size and resolution is that LG should be able to make a 65″ 8K set without any more difficulty, although issues of yield would be likely to make it expensive.

The history of OLED monitors has been fraught with quality problems, so it will be interesting to see if LG can succeed in the market. I anticipate quite a high price, so the market share might be limited. Still, I’d be happy to give a unit an extended test 🙂 (BR)
