LG DualUp 28MQ780 Monitor Review: A Unique New Display Shape

What They Say

Tom’s Hardware looked at the LG DualUp 28MQ780 monitor which has a 16:18 aspect ratio (and is effectively dual stacked 16:9 panels). The resolution is 2560 x 2880 so it’s the equivalent of dual 21″ 2560 x 1440 QuadHD panels. Output of the IPS panels is 300 cd/m² and contrast is 1,000:1. Features include dual HDMI inputs, DP1.4 and USB-C with dual 7W speakers and a headphone output. Colour coverage was tested at 95% of DCI-P3 and 104% of sRGB.

An unusual feature is an articulating arm at one side with a desk clamp to allow 25° of motion. It also has 100mm VESA mount points.

As you would expect the dual HDMI ports can operate in a PBP mode with the display divided in the middle.

The reviewer clarified that there are no good features for gaming and refresh is 60Hz, fixed. The monitor costs $699 in the US on Amazon at press time.

What We Think

I’m sure there are plenty of people who would like this kind of configuration and if you are working on portrait documents a lot, it would probably be great, but I remain unconvinced about the ergonomics of a monitor that’s as tall as this. I covered this in some detail at the beginning of the year. The Shape of (Monitor) Things to Come (Part 1)) (BR)
