Kopin Golden-I is Light

Kopin introduced its Golden-I display at the event. The display is designed to work with a smartphone that has USB Type-C to connect to the controlling system and the display supports the DisplayPort Alt mode and that means that they can be used with Android or Windows systems, but not, yet, Apple devices. The Snapdragon 820 and 835 are supported with 845 support in developnent. Staff told us that one reason for designing the glasses as an add-on rather than an integrated Android device is that the architecture means that IT departments do not have to deal with an additional device and can use existing qualified platforms.

The cable is very thin and staff told us that the cable took a year to develop to get all the features that the company wanted.

The glasses use Kopin’s own 854 x 480 microdisplay with brightness of up to 2,000 cd/m² (although it was described as ‘up to 2,600 nits’ in the press conference) and weight is very low at 1.5 oz (42.5 gms). The display is certified to IP67 for difficult operating conditions. It includes the Kopin Whisper Voice technology for voice control and there is a 13 megapixel camera which can be operated by voice.

Kopin told us that AT&T is looking at the glasses for service technician use – the firm has 36,000 technicians, so the market potential is substantial.

The Golden-I will ship for $899 at the end of Q3 of this year.
