What They Say
Karl Guttag, sometime Display Daily contributor and AR/VR specialist, was visited by Lumus which showed him new prototype AR glasses that impressed him with:
- The display has 2048 x 2048 resolution at 3,000 cd/m² with 50° diagonal FOV
- The LCOS device is a field sequential device from Compound Photonics with ‘high contrast with great colour’ and 3?m pixels
- Although as a prototype with a simple lens it has distortion, Guttag said
“The color and brightness uniformity of the image, while not perfect, is vastly better than any other waveguide-type optics I have seen”.
- He estimates that the vertical and horizontal angular resolution is 4X the performance of the Hololens 2
- He said that Lumus has claimed the headset will achieve 650 cd/m²/lumen compared to others at 50 cd/m²/lumen
- Compound Photonics has
“taken field sequential LCOS to a whole new level”.
- The glasses are quite transparent compared to others with light to the eye reduced by around 15%. That compares to others at -60% or -70%.
- Front projection of the light is currently around 5%, but should get down to 1% in production
Conclusion: Microsoft spent billions of dollars on Hololens to look so much worse than Maximus.
What We Think
Karl’s opinion is one that I have complete confidence in. If you are in AR/VR at all, it’s worth a look at the full article on Karl’s site, which goes into great detail.
I have been reporting on Lumus since SID in 2005 and I was particularly impressed with the technology at SID in 2011. In 2018, I saw a headset from Jorjin using the technology at MWC. (BR)
