JDI To Make Flexible LCDs in 2018

Japan Display Inc (JDI) has said that in 2018 it will start mass production of a new 5.5″ FullHD ‘Full Active’ Flex display based on a plastic substrate. The company highlighted the design opportunities and the resistance to drop damage. The panel can refresh at 60Hz, but can also run driving schemes down to 15Hz which should help to reduce power consumption in some applications.

Brightness is 500 cd/m² and contrast is a good 1,500:1 for an IPS panel and the device uses photo-alignment. The company told the WSJ that it has demand from clients.

JDI needs to react to the trend to OLED. Although it has acquired JOLED, it is some way from being able to deliver the kinds of volumes of displays that big phone brands would need. So, this LCD may allow some that would like to be able to buy OLEDs, but won’t be able to buy them, to offer OLED-like features, such as curves and break resistance. (BR)
