Intel to Acquire Computer Vision Company Movidius

Intel is to buy Movidius which is a specialist developer of SoCs for vision processing (Is AR the New Hope for 3D?). Intel wants the technology to be used in “augmented, virtual and merged reality, drones, robotics, digital still cameras and beyond”. The first Movidius chip was used in the Google Project Tango.

Analyst Comment

Adding and exploiting sensors has transformed mobile phones and Intel’s investment in RealSense shows how important it thinks making computers aware of the their environment is. At the moment, our friend Jon Peddie says that Intel doesn’t plan to use its process technology to make Movidius chips, but this might be an interesting development. (BR)
