Intel Collaborates with Luxottica Group on Wearable Tech

Just after we reported on the use of Intel processors for the second generation Google Glass device, Intel announced that it has entered into a multi-year collaboration on wearable tech with the Luxottica Group.

The Luxottica Group makes eyewear for a large number of brands including Coach, DKNY, Dolce & Gabanna, Armani, Oakley, Ralph Lauren, Ray-Ban, Versace and many more.

Intel has no products in the wearable sector at the moment but appears to have a great deal of interest in this developing market.

Both parties are looking to use their respective leadership in technology and design to push the envelope of what is possible in the wearable technology market. A very specific task will be to create glasses that are not only smart but also look good. If people would like to wear them, the issue of a killer app for augmented reality headsets may be a moot point.

While the ‘function over form’ approach seems not to be very successful so far, the ‘form and function’ result from this collaboration may be more successful. (NH)
