Immersive VR interferes with Head–trunk Coordination in young children

What They Say

A report in Nature highlighted the challenges to the development of head/torso coordination. The report shows that VR use disrupts the default coordination pattern ‘where a steering role is assigned to the trunk, which causes 6- to 8-year-olds to employ an ill-adapted segmental strategy’.

What We Think

Not strictly a display topic, I know, but this kind of human factor is important. Personally, with what I know of the development of the human visual system and stereopsis etc, I would be very nervous about anybody that isn’t a long way into development using a VR system more often than just ‘occasionally’. This kind of story can impact the market and I remember the furore about the Nintendo Virtual Boy that was killed by concerns over its effect on children’s development (although it was also criticised for other reasons).
