IBC Content Everywhere and NHK bring 8K TV to the Middle East

London, 29 December 2014; IBC Content Everywhere is a new series of global events addressing the latest developments in media. With digital out-of-home presentations and high quality acquisition high on the list of current trends, IBC Content Everywhere will bring NHK’s Super Hi-Vision system to the Middle East for the first time.

Super Hi-Vision is an 8K television system, featuring 16 times the resolution of today’s HD, together with a much higher frame rate of 120 progressive images a second. Developed by Japanese national broadcaster NHK, it is aimed at both consumers and at events and presentations such as museums.

NHK plans trial satellite broadcasts in 2016, with the launch of public services set for 2018. It is one of the most important initiatives in future television systems, firing the debate over higher resolutions, extended colour capabilities and higher frame rates. The demonstration at IBC Content Everywhere MENA gives broadcasters and network operators a chance to see the capabilities, as well as discuss the challenges of transmitting this high data-rate system.

This ultra-high resolution video also looks astonishing on a huge screen. Even the biggest projections look bright, rich and detailed. Coupled with the high frame rate, it creates an impression like no other. Cinemas, museums and presentation companies will instantly grasp the potential for this crowd-stopping, eye-popping system.

At IBC Content Everywhere MENA NHK will be showing some of the latest content they have shot. This includes remarkable coverage of games at the 2014 FIFA World Cup finals in Brazil, as well as some specially shot material for art galleries and museums in Japan.

IBC Content Everywhere is a new initiative from IBC, bringing together all those involved in rich media production, devices, apps, content personalisation, social media, and big data and cloud services. The first event ran in parallel with IBC in Amsterdam in September 2014, with the second, aimed at the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) market to be held in Dubai 20 – 22 January 2015.

“We have developed IBC Content Everywhere to address the emergence of connected content,” said Michael Crimp, CEO of IBC. “Our event in the Middle East will share knowledge about how content can be created, managed, monetised and shared online and to mobile and connected devices. The display of Super Hi-Vision complements today’s connected environment with a vision of the future where massive, high resolution screens will be a part of the media landscape”

Super Hi-Vision has had a long association with IBC, starting with the first European demonstration in 2006, and marking many technical milestones with presentations at IBC since then.

Exhibitors at IBC Content Everywhere MENA in Dubai range from creative broadcast suppliers like Quantel to IT giants like Cisco; content distribution networks like Akamai to telecom service providers like Etisalat. Conference speakers include senior executives from broadcasters like Discovery Networks, BeIN and Sky News Arabia; and vendors and service providers like Microsoft, Ericsson and YouTube.
IBC Content Everywhere MENA will be held in the Madinat Jumeirah, in Dubai, 20 – 22 January 2015.
