Taiwanese reports say that Huawei is expected to ship around 90% of its target of 140 million smartphones (126 million), as it has hit competition from vendors including Oppo and Vivo. The company has started to push back and that could mean a target of 170 million for 2017, which would mean an overall level of more than half a billion smartphones for the top three Chinese brands in 2017.
As the Chinese brands have prospered, Taiwanese brands have fallen back, with Asustek down to 20 million, from a target of 25 million. HTC may drop to as low as 10-12 million in 2016, from around 18 million last year. Acer is likely to ship less than five million, a long way down from its target of ten million.
