What They Say
UploadVR speculated that HP might have ended G2 production and be getting ready to exit the VR market. The thought was triggered by:
- A Reddit user claimed to have been told by an HP rep that it was stopping production of the G2 next year
- Just before Meta Connect last week, HP heavily discounted Reverb G2 from $600 to $350 in the US.
- Just 5% of SteamVR users in September were using any kind of Windows MR headset, compared to 64% using Meta headsets and 17% using the Valve Index.
- HP’s former Global Head of Virtual Reality and ‘public face of VR for HP’ Joanna Popper left the company earlier in the year and UploadVR has not seen a replacement.
The blog reached out to HP and Microsoft, but their responses were very vague.
What We Think
It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Microsoft and its partners getting out of the market. I have to say, I thought the HP G2 professional version had good features, but whether there is enough business to develop a useful ecosystem around Windows, given the success and commitment of Meta, is an open question.
