What They Say
Tom’s Hardware reviewed the HP Reverb G2 (HP Extends XR Beyond the Visuals) and really liked the sharpness of the displays, but found the tracking to be ‘a huge letdown’. As a result it hasn’t been added to the ‘best VR headsets’ list. The HP headset uses Valve’s dual element fresnel lens system, developed for the Valve Index although the field of view is 114° compared to 130° on the Index. However Tom’s thought the angle was nearer to 90°.
The IPD adjustment is a limited 60-68mm, although HP said that ±2.5mm still provides acceptable performance. The dual 2160 x 2160 LCD panels are said to be ‘clear & bright’.
The headset has changed from using textiles to plastics. The textiles are comfortable, but hard to clean.
What We Think
The Field of view issue could be a big one for professional applications. The loss of tracking accuracy and performance could also cause users to lose the immersiveness of the experience. (BR)
