HP Drops HDMI and Disc Drive for Thinnest Laptop

While the Spectre might be HP’s new flagship, it was not the only laptop launched in Versailles. The Envy range was also updated with three new models, including a hybrid with an UltraHD display.

HP Envy x360The 15.6″ Envy x360 is 21% thinner than its previous incarnation, at 18.8mm; it weighs just over 2kg. Battery life has also been improved, from eight hours to 11 hours. The processor is either a sixth-gen Core i5/i7 with Intel Iris graphics, or seventh-gen AMD FX 9800P with Radeon R7 graphics.

UltraHD is the x360’s standard resolution, although 1920 x 1080 is available as an option. HDMI, USB-A 3.0 and USB-C ports are featured. The laptop has up to a 2TB HDD and a 256GB SSD, with 16GB of RAM. It will be launched at the end of May, starting at $680.

The other Envy laptops are not differentiated by name, known only as the 15.6″ Envy and 17.3″ Envy. Both have edge-to-edge glass, three USB 3.0 ports and a USB-C port. Additionally, Fast Charge will take the units to 90% power in 90 minutes when powered off.

Both models are lighter than their predecessors: 2kg (17.95mm thick) for the 15.6″ and 3kg (25.45mm) for the 17.3″. The smaller model has a choice of Intel processors (up to Core i7), with an option of UMA or Intel Iris graphics. It also has 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB HDD and 256GBB SSD storage. Windows Hello support is enabled through an optional HD IR camera. The 17.3″ unit has a Core i7 processor with Nvidia Geforce GTX 940MX graphics; up to a 1TB HDD or 512GB SSD; and an optical disc drive. Windows Hello is supported through an optional Intel Realsense camera.

HP will begin to sell the 15.6″ Envy online on the 25th May and in-store on the 12th June, starting at $780. The 17.3″ Envy will go on sale at the end of May, for $1,030.
