How many desktop PCs have been ‘furloughed’ in the UK?

What They Say

A third of UK desktop PCs have been left unused during the present Covid crisis according to research and over a fifth are likely to be unused next year. Just under half of respondents said increased spending on laptops would be the main focus for their IT spend over the next 12 months, compared to 14 per cent who said they would be focusing investment on desktop PCs.

What We Think

This is really not surprising, but it’s good to get research data to back up what might be imagined. Of course, the high level of redundant PCs is accompanied by redundant monitors and that does not bode well for the desktop monitor market next year. Monitors are not perishable and can be stored until needed. Plenty of corporates will simply put off refresh of their desktop inventories. Of course, moving to more notebooks might be a way of selling new functionality. It should be good for monitors with USB Type-C support for notebook connections for charging. (BR)
