Google to Present on HR OLEDs at SID

Clay BavorLast year at SID, Google’s Clay Bavor gave a keynote in which he said that Google was working on systems with 20 megapixels per eye and drew gasps from the assembled engineers. At this year’s SID, Carlin Vieri from the company will present a paper entitled “18 Mpixel 4.3-in. 1443-ppi 120-Hz OLED Display for Wide-Field-of-View High-Acuity Head-Mounted Displays” along with engineers from LG. The event schedule says

“The world’s highest resolution (18 megapixel, 1443 ppi) OLED-on-glass display was developed. White OLED with color filter structure was used for high-density pixelization, and an n-type LTPS backplane was chosen for higher electron mobility compared to mobile phone displays. A custom high bandwidth driver IC was fabricated. Foveated driving logic for VR and AR applications was implemented”.

Our own Matt Brennesholz is giving an invited paper immediately before this talk, so we’ll have a presence to hear this talk. At the SID, BOE also showed a 3.5″ display with 4320 x 4800 resolution on a 3.5″ diagonal – creating a 20.7 megapixel panel, so there is lots of activity ‘just below the surface’. (BOE Causes Analyst Overload!). (BR)
