Samsung Cinema LED screen technology has been installed at the Dream Palace theatre in Esslingen, Germany. The Dream Palace is the first location in Germany — and only the second location in the DACH region — to use the technology.
The display is 10.3m × 5.4m, made up of nearly 9 million self-lighting pixels and operates at full 4K resolution (4,096 × 2,160) with a brightness of up to 500cd/m². Content playback is possible in the two common cinema formats, “flat” and “scope”.

Because of the restrictions caused by the need for DCI approval, the specifications for the LED display in Esslingen are the same as in other installations.
We’re grateful to one of our readers who pointed us to this article in the German press that compared a presentation of Jurassic World: Falling Kingdom that the viewer had watched the day before in an Imax theatre in Berlin. The reviewer noted some problems with visual quality on the Imax, because of faulty screen vibrators (used to reduce laser speckle). The viewer also noted noise that was distracting from the vibrators. However, the Imax screen was 3D, while the Esslingen installation is 2D only.
The reviewer thought that the image quality was better on the LED display, even with current content, which is not graded to get the optimum results from an LED display. However, the display is a lot smaller and that meant less of a sense of immersion. There was no real problem with audio, which doesn’t come from behind the screen as it does in projection, but the reviewer thought that the audio was a bit more spectacular in Berlin, than in Esslingen.
