What They Say
Invidis reported that Distec and Tanvas have announced a display that has ‘fine surface haptics’ based on electroadhesion.
According to Distec, previous technologies for haptic feedback on touchscreens, such as electromechanical or vibrotactile haptics, are not suitable for permanently installed, IP-protected HMIs, as a certain amount of freedom of movement is required for the front glass. The Tanvas Touch solution, on the other hand, uses electroadhesion and therefore does not have any moving parts.
Distec and Tanvas see the areas of application not only in industry, but also in automotive, home automation, displays in advertising and smart surfaces.
Tanvas-Touch will be available as a “Haptic Touch” feature on Distec’s POS-Pro monitors and panel PCs from February 2022. It starts with devices with 10.1 inches, later all sizes of the Pro series from 7 to 15.6 inches follow step by step. Other sizes are available on a project basis. The series devices will also have a slim stainless steel housing with IP65 protection.
What We Think
We’ve reported on the developments by Tanvas for several years. (TanvasTouch Adds Haptic Capability to Touchscreen Displays) and Haptic perception: A primer are both good articles from 2017. I was pretty sure that I had seen this kind of electroadhesive haptics from Fujitsu as an R&D initiative in the past, but I couldn’t find it in the 177 articles mentioning haptics on the site, although I did find a reference showing something like it.
