What They Say
Facebook Research Labs posted a blog post that showed a headset concept that adds displays on the outside of the device to show the user’s eyes, a concept it calls ‘reverse passthrough’. The idea is to make mixed reality more seamless in ‘social and professional settings’. The latest prototype features purpose-built optics, electronics, software, and a range of supporting technologies to capture and depict more realistic 3D faces.
What We Think
I couldn’t resist including the image of the first version of the headset that used gaze recognition and a games engine to recreate the sense of the user’s eyes as well as the more recent ‘goggle-look’ version. I can certainly see that this kind of mixed reality might be more functional in the shorter term than really good augmented reality as the amount of light on the users’ eyes is more controlled. (BR)
