EU court: Selling streaming boxes with piracy add-ons is illegal

We reported on a court case in the UK that saw a dealer brought to court for selling a streaming box which was a ‘fully-loaded’ Kodi box, which included plug-ins that allowed access to pirated TV content (Kodi Box Dealer Taken to Court). In a separate case that came up through the Dutch courts and against a Dutch online shop, Filmspieler.nl, the European Court of Justice has ruled that selling the boxes with the plug-ins pre-loaded was a breach of EU law.

In its judgement, the court said that “Such actions are not to be confused with the mere provision of physical facilities, referred to in the [copyright] directive’.
