Ericsson has released its annual report on mobile data and communications and said that it believes that the US will be an important market for 5G mobile connectivity, with 25% of all subscriptions being 5G in North America in 2022, representing the highest market penetration in the world. By that time, there will be 550 million 5G subscribers globally.
The company forecast that there will be 29 billion connected devices by 2022, with 18 billion connections related to the IoT. The company expects 8 billion mobile broadband subscriptions by that date, up from 3.5 billion in 2015 and 4.3 billion this year.
Data traffic per device will contine to grow with mobile data traffic growing to 11 GB per smartphone, per month, up from 1.9 GB in 2016, with Western Europe . Mobile PC traffic will also grow from, 7.7GB per month this year to 23 GB per month. Video remains the key driver of traffic and by the end of the forecast, nearly 60% of tablet data will be video.
