Attendees of the SID/DSCC Business Conference during Display Week 2020 will not be able to see the speakers in person, but they will still get a comprehensive perspective on the emerging technologies that enable TV, IT and mobile advances as well as development of an entirely new display technology, microLEDs. The two sessions on emerging technologies will be held in the virtual conference during Display Week 2020 from August 3rd – 7th. The presentations will be available on demand from August 3rd onward.
The first session titled “Emerging Technologies Enabling TV and IT Advances”, sponsored by Applied Materials, will cover emerging display technologies expected to impact the TV and/or IT markets. Experts from Applied Materials, GE, DSCC, Rohinni, CYNORA and Kyulux will cover topics including PVD and CVD of thin films for OLED and QD displays, new phosphor materials, ink jet printing of OLED, QD color conversion, miniLEDs, microLEDs, evaporable OLED materials- fluorescence, TADF, Hyperfluorescence and more.
Summaries of the talks from the first session include:
- James Xiao, Applied Material’s Corporate Vice President and General Manager of the Display Thin Film Group will highlight Applied Material’s role in the display ecosystem. In the OLED industry, Applied Material’s PVD and CVD line of tools have enabled LTPS and Oxide backplane production for OLED displays while Applied Material’s PECVD tools used to deposit Silicon Nitride films for thin film encapsulation (TFE) have enabled flexible and foldables. As OLEDs continue to expand, Applied Materials is expected to play a crucial role in offering integrated MOx solutions built upon their existing G8.7 and G10.5 PVD, CVD, enflexorTM TFE and EBR unit tools and processes to accelerate the adoption of top-gate MOx back plane technology and flexible OLED front-plane technology, and enable the fast ramp of MOx OLED yield and mass production.
- Dr. James Murphy, GE’s LED Phosphor Program Manager and Senior Scientist will highlight GE’s innovation in PFS/KSF narrow band phosphor technology that enable wide color gamut displays. KSF provides a cost effective, on-chip LED solution for wide color gamut displays that is RoHS compliant. Jim’s presentation will discuss the phosphor technology’s path forward around integration into future displays with higher color gamut (>90% BT.2020) and additional functionality (miniLEDs, remote films, microLEDs) versus current HDR 4K/8K displays. An update on GE’s efforts around narrow-band green phosphor development will also be presented.
- DSCC’s Director of Display Research, Siddharth Mohan, will give an overview of inkjet printing (IJP) for use in OLED and QD display technology. IJP plays a pivotal role in the display roadmap as it stands critical to enabling emerging display technologies such as printed RGB OLEDs, QD-OLEDs and electroluminescent quantum dots (EL-QDs). In his talk, Sid will analyze the role IJP plays in enabling mass production of RGB OLEDs, QD-OLEDs and EL-QDs. He will highlight the advantages and challenges of IJP and provide a market outlook for these applications.
- Matt Gerber, CEO of Rohinni, will discuss how Rohinni’s technology is enabling the creation of next generation displays. Gerber will provide an overview of Rohinni’s process for creating mini LED based LCD backlights and video wall modules, discuss the readiness status of the current mini LED and micro LED placement processes, and review the barriers to commercialization for both mini and micro based display products.
- Adam Kablanian, CEO of CYNORA, will detail CYNORA’s execution of core innovation milestones to enable “displays of the future” with its breakthrough emitters. The introduction of its first product, a high-efficiency fluorescent blue emitter, marked the company’s transition to commercialization early this year. Next on the roadmap is a TADF-based deep Green emitter slated for launch in the coming months. In parallel, progress on the company’s TADF-based deep Blue product is accelerating, with engineering focused on delivering a product that satisfies the key must-haves for next-generation displays: high efficiency, high brightness and long lifetime – with no compromises.
- Junji Adachi, Co-founder and CEO of Kyulux, will describe Kyulux’s advances in commercializing the company’s Hyperfluorescence OLED emitter technology. Kyulux started shipping the world’s first TADF / Hyperfluorescence (HF) light emitting material to Wisechip Semiconductor for use in yellow PMOLED products. HF provides highly efficient and pure color with narrow emission spectrum without using any rare metals such as iridium and platinum. HF combines Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence (TADF) and fluorescence to provide narrow emission spectrum with four times higher emission efficiency than fluorescence. Kyulux is now developing red, green and blue HF for AMOLED applications with partner display makers. The life enhancement in all red, green and blue are remarkable and Junji will present the latest results in his talk.
The second session titled “Emerging Technologies Enabling Mobile Advances” will feature presentations on new technologies enabling advances in mobile displays. Experts from OTI Lumionics, InZiv, iBeam Materials, Compound Photonics, VueReal and Orbotech will cover topics including novel cathodes for OLEDs, nanoscale optical characterization, ultrathin and flexible microLEDs, backplane and driver architecture for microLED A/R applications, high volume production of microLED displays, AI powered AOI and more.
Summaries of talks in this session include:
- Michael G. Helander, Co-Founder and CEO of OTI Lumionics, will discuss how OTI’s Lumionics novel solutions can enable new display applications for OLEDs including under display camera and sensors, low power IT panels, automotive displays, 8K and transparent panels. Enabling these new display applications for OLED will require new material innovations that look beyond the organic stack. This talk will discuss the role cathode patterning plays in enabling new display applications for OLED.
- David Lewis, Founder and CEO of InZiv, will highlight how InZiv is developing new micro and nano-optical tools for the evolving display industry, addressing challenges facing various strata of the manufacturing process. The newest OLED, MicroLED, and QLED displays are comprised of pixel features that are smaller than ever before – in some cases, on the scale of single microns. This new reality in display technology is generating demand for a new set of tools to enable these exciting advances. InZiv’s technology offers the highest resolution in optical and spectral characterization, a potentially game-changing method of display inspection. CEO David Lewis will outline some of the challenges emerging in the industry and will present an overview of InZiv’s nano-optical technologies, which offer correlated structural, optical and spectral data – all on the nanoscale.
- Vladimir Matias, CEO of iBeam Materials will outline the company’s revolutionary new technology to make paper-thin and ultra-flexible microLED displays. The sheets of LEDs, produced by roll-to-roll manufacturing, will allow large-area monolithic integration of LEDs and active transistor devices. MicroLEDs made on robust sheets of thin metal foil will in this way deliver the super bright and power-efficient displays of the future.
- Mike Lee, Compound Photonics’ President of Corporate Development, will describe Compound Photonics’ innovative digital backplane design and driver architecture for MicroLED displays for use in AR applications. Mike will outline the company’s product roadmap that enable next generation AR devices.
