What They Say
The DVB, which is the key technical body for European broadcasters and a significant player globally, has approved a new specification for 8K video delivered using the HEVC codec. Up to now, it has only set parameters for transmissions up to UltraHD. The specification covers broadcast and broadband delivery (via DVB-Dash).
The organisation expects to add support for further codecs in 2022 including VVC (and it has said in the past that it will review AV1 and AVS3 codecs as well). HDR and HFR support are also under review.
What We Think
As we saw from the recent Omdia forecast, 8K growth will be slow. In our Display Daily today, Omdia said that streaming is the key delivery mechanism for even 4K and it seems that it will be even more important for 8K. (BR)
