DisplayMate Makes XS Test

DisplayMate’s Ray Soneira has published its review of the display on the new iPhone XS Max. The new phone has more brightness, better accuracy and 22% more display area.

As usual with Apple displays, the colour performance is impressive and Soneira said that in both Rec. 709/sRGB and in P3 mode, the colour accuracy is 0.8 JNCD, which, as before is ‘visually indistinguishable from perfect’. DisplayMate has new tests that check the colour accuracy at different levels of picture brightness (Average Picture Level – APL). The test result showed little change in accuracy between low APL and 50% APL. The display has the smallest brightness variation with viewing angle that Soneira has seen at 25% at 30º.

Soneira has long argued for better brightness for use in high ambient light and the iPhone XS Max has a record 660 cd/m² when calib rated and up to 710 cd/m² in Auto High Brightness Mode. Screen reflectance is in the low range at 4.7% and contrast in high ambient light ranges from 139:1 to 164:1.

At the other extreme, there is a super Dim setting that brings the brightness down to 2 cd/m², but the performance remains very good.

DisplayMate analysed the different modes used in the night modes.
