What They Say
Earlier this week we carried a forecast from Deloitte about 8K. After publication we realised that we had missed the firm’s predictions for VR and XR. We also found that the pdf that is linked in this article gives a lot more information about 8K (and this nice graphic below of ppi values for different 8K sets)
Conclusions on VR in the report are
- Overall spending on AR and VR headsets, software, and services, including consumer purchases, rose to $12B worldwide in 2020, up 50% from 2019.
- It was still lower than pre-pandemic forecasts, which predicted almost 80% growth. Deloitte predicts higher growth in XR after the pandemic subsides.
- Fewer than 100,000 VR, AR, and XR headsets were purchased annually by businesses, organizations, and schools from 2015 through 2019, though an upward trend is expected.
- The fastest-growing XR markets are expected to be in enterprise or education over the next several years, Deloitte predicts. Immersive training and educational XR are growing fast, even if their bases remain relatively small.
- This could be accentuated by the fact that Magic Leap decided to pursue enterprises as its primary market earlier this year. Both Facebook-owned Oculus and HTC launched enterprise divisions in 2019. Apple could also launch AR and VR products as early as 2021, which could appeal to enterprises and schools over time.
- Moving forward, Deloitte says it’s likely that both existing and new manufacturers will introduce high-quality AR/VR/MR headsets under the $1,000 price point.
- The firm offered some tips for best practices for companies and schools looking to use XR:
What We Think
Nothing surprising here, but it’s interesting a general consultancy looking at this topic. (BR)
