What They Say
Virtual labs may change the future of science education. Dangerous subjects can be studied and animations and simulations can be used.
What We Think
The BBC found the system ‘a bit glitchy’, but clearly interactivity with 3D data and environments can be really helpful in accelerating learning and giving access to facilities that would not be available in the real world. I remember hearing a talk by an Oculus executive who explained how a simulation was used to show those new to VR how it could be used to simulate going to the top of a tall building in a lift. Although intellectually, everybody knew that this was ‘just a simulation’, nobody was prepared to ‘step off the edge’. As the saying goes, “What I hear, I forget. What I see, I remember, but what I do, I know”. (BR)
