The DTG Summit is always an interesting look into the UK broadcast industry, which we at Display Monitor tend to focus on less than the European or US markets. Nevertheless, this year’s event showed some clear thoughts about the direction of the industry that could be applied worldwide.
UltraHD remains a fluid subject, with even its definition being debated. I feel that HDR is bound to become part of the standard sooner rather than later – it has been shown that the enhancement provides the most ‘bang for your (bandwidth) buck’ (Display Monitor Vol 20 No 46), but in order to integrate it, a system that supports both legacy and modern sets will be needed. Broadcasters need simplicity, so it is likely that an approach similar to the BBC’s (see BBC Approach to HDR Has Advantages for Broadcasters) will be adopted.
