According to Broadband TV News, Liberty Global’s German subsidiary, Unitymedia is to launch a gigabit Internet service in the city of Bochum in the first quarter of 2018.
The service will be based on DOCSIS 3.1 and will be first commercial deployment of DOCSIS 3.1 in Europe for Liberty Global. Bochum will then become the first city in Germany to be almost completely covered by gigabit Internet access. Unitymedia, the city of Bochum and local utility provider, Stadtwerke, founded the initiative ”Gigabit-City Bochum” and through this initiative more than 95% of the households and businesses in Bochum will have high-speed Internet by the end of 2018.
Unitymedia reaches over 170,000 households in Bochum, corresponding to around 90% of all households. Fibre-optic lines will be installed to reach some parts of the city, as part of the upgrade.
