Atomos Adds PQ to Monitor Recorders

At NAB, Atomos announced updates to its new Shogun Flame monitors (Atomos Brings HDR to Field Monitors), as well as a new Shogun product.

It has only been one month since the Shogun Flame monitors were released, and Atomos has already updated them, based on user feedback. These monitors were designed for HDR, and Atomos has added a PQ input and output, adding HDR functionality beyond on-board monitoring. The input means that users can connect from their editing package, for HDR grading using the monitor; the output can be used to connect HDR-compatible external displays for on-set reviewing.

Additionally, new waveform guidelines were introduced to make exposing for HDR easier. Users will be able to toggle between a display line on the entire log signal’s luma parade (showing how much dynamic range (DR) is currently being monitored or clipped) and a stretch mode, which shows the DR monitors as the entire waveform; this removes the clipped range from view.

Adding to the Shogun line was the new all-in-one monitor recorder, the 7″ Shogun Inferno. This flagship product features 1,500 cd/m² of brightness, 10-bit colour, 10-stops of DR and HDR features, as well as support for UltraHD at 60fps over Quad-SDI. Playback and editing functionality is also built in.

“Never before have you actually been able to monitor and shoot what you are actually seeing”, said Atomos CEO and co-founder Jeromy Young.

All of the features from the Flame series are also present on the Inferno, in addition to Raw to Raw CDNG recording (will also be added to other Shogun monitors in an update one month after the launch of the Inferno) and a PQ input/output. The monitor will cost $2,000.

Atomos’ Samurai Blade, Ninja Blade, Shogun and Ninja Assassin monitors will also be upgraded – for free – to the AtomHDR image processing in May.

The final announcement to come from the company at NAB dealt with correcting colour drift. This occurs naturally over time in every display, but they do not all have the capability to correct drift. Atomos has partnered with X-Rite to deliver professional colour calibration to its displays.

Going forward, X-Rite’s existing i1Display Pro product will work with Atomos’ monitor recorders.
