Display Makers Turn to Embedded Touch

Display makers are increasingly looking to in- and on-cell touch solutions for mobile phones, as the global market slows. These embedded touch products can deliver thinner and brighter displays, as well as shortening the supply chain for smartphone vendors. IHS expects in- and on-cell touch displays to have a 50% share of smartphone displays shipped in 2017.

The appearance of AMOLED technology for phones has prompted the advance of new touch solutions, with greater flexibility, lighter weight and ‘other feature improvements’. IHS expects emerging touch solutions for flexible displays to grow more than 50% YoY in 2016. Flexible displays were brought to consumer attention with the Galaxy S6 Edge smartphone, launched in 2015.
