Google has released Android Oreo (Go Edition), a ‘lightweight’ version of Android that is intended for lower cost smartphones and the announcement was made in India, which is likely to be one of the big markets – India now has more Android users than the US does. The OS is intended for phones with 512MB to 1GB of RAM. The plan is to keep the lighter version in line with the full power version, with releases around the same time as the main OS.
Oreo will start up 30% faster and optimises storage space and there are a number of optimised Go apps and a special version of the Play Store which will supply lighter apps.
Devices using Oreo are expected to be released early in 2018.
