African OTT Success Depends on Mobile Distribution

OTT TV and video will still be an immature market in sub-Saharan Africa in 2022, according to Digital TV Research. Revenue will reach just $640 million for the 35 countries by then, but this is 12 times the $52 million of 2016. In 2022, South Africa will account for 40% of the region’s turnover and Nigeria 21%.

SVOD sales will be $475 million by 2022 (74% of the total), 22 times the 2016 figure, with 10.12 million subscribers. By the end of the forecast period, it is forecast that there will be 13 million households with fixed broadband and 486 million smartphone users. Mobile operators will be in a strong position.
