The Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC) has not been around for long – it was established this year (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 28). It could be seen as a bad sign, therefore, that founding member Broadcom has left the group over an IP disagreement.
Stacey Higginbotham of Gigaom broke the news after noting that Broadcom’s name was missing from the list of founding members in a recent press release. Mentions of Broadcom have also been removed from the OIC’s website. A source told Higginbotham that Broadcom had left over provisions in IP licensing agreements, which requires companies donating code to the project to give up their right to sue over that IP. The rival Allseen Alliance does not have such a policy.
OIC spokesperson Gary Martz confirmed that Broadcom has left the OIC and the above policy, although did not tie it to Broadcom’s exit.
