AMD: ‘If 28nm Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix it’

Rory Read, AMD’s CEO, has detailed the company’s two-year roadmap at a presentation for Deutsche Bank in Germany. He said that 28nm would remain a major process for the company for some time, but added that AMD is planning to invest in 20nm and 16/14nm FinFET nodes – on certain products. For example, K12 and the upcoming Zen platform will move to 16nm and FinFET, while products such as Kaveri and the FX-series are volume parts that will remain on 28nm.

For the rest of 2014 and early 2015, GPUs will be the main focus. There may be a new GPU family within the next six months. Next year the ‘big story’ will be Skybridge (Display Monitor Vol 21 No 19), which ‘aims to create pin-compatible 64-bit x86 and ARM SoCs; dense ARM servers; and the updated Carrizo platform. AMD’s first iteration of stacked (high bandwidth) memory may also see the light of day.
