What They Say
V-Nova’s MPEG-4 LCEVC technology has been used by Globo of Brazil to provide an enhancement layer for 1080i Rec.709 SDR TV signals to 1080p with 10 bit HDR and with colour in the Rec. 2020 space. The technique is said to have reduced the bitrate compared to encoding the whole stream by 40% as well as delivering savings in computing the encoding. The demonstration also included a trial of DASH streaming of the content.
The technology was used on content from the FIFA World Cup.
What We Think
This kind of enhancement layer is an an interesting topic. I am writing up something for the 8K Association about the work that NHK has done with enhancement layers and will provide a link once it is published. (BR)
